Q&A with Melanie Jespersen: ''The best part about being a mom is the love''

Meet Melanie Jespersen; a wife and mother of two, a 6-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy. Her family is very multicultural. Melanie is a Hispanic American and her husband is Danish, so they speak many different languages and hold many different cultural traditions in their home. She is also the curator of the kids fashion web shop mylillelimon.com.

How would you describe your own personal style?
I would describe my personal style as very laid back. I love onesies or pinafores and value comfort over all so I am always in jumpers and jeans with loafers or sneakers. I do on occasion enjoy the company of a nude pump and a little black dress.

As a busy mom how do you combine motherhood with your career?
That is a difficult balance to achieve and I am not sure I have come close to it but I try my best and that is all one can do, is do their best. Working primarily from home I try to give myself a daily schedule to keep so I do not get online afterwards. It’s so important to be present as a mother so I do my best to respect the schedule of hours and only work when the kids are at school.

If the opportunity of a lifetime presents itself but there’s no way you can balance this with being a fulltime mom, what would you do? Dream job or family?
Family 100%. There is nothing that compares to family in my book.

What is your guilty pleasure?
I have an obsession and a long standing relationship with hand bags.

Which fashion mom do you look at for inspiration?
I absolutely adore Miko Bowen from simplelikelove.com.

What is the best part about being a mom?
The best part about being a mom is the love. Loving your children and being loved by them gives me the greatest joy.

What inspires you most in life and where do you find creativity?
My children are my inspiration and I find creativity through their spirit.

Are there any fun (childhood) traditions that you share with your kids?
We save some presents for Christmas day (25th) for the kids to open which is when I used to open my presents as a kid growing up in NYC. So late on the 24th we will put out some cookies and milk for Santa and my husband and I eat them so the kids believe it was Santa. I also want to start making Christmas tamales with the kids so that is a tradition that will soon be started as they are now old enough to help out with the preparations.

What’s currently on your reading list? Favorite book(s) of all time?
Right now I am re-reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone which I am introducing to my daughter but for my own personal reading I can’t wait to pick up the latest novel by Paul Auster (my all time favorite novelist) 4321. My favourite book of all time is The Brooklyn Follies.

What keeps you relaxed in stressful times? Describe your ultimate Me-time moment.
A warm bath surrounded by scented Jo Malone candles.

How do you stay healthy? Are there any beauty and lifestyle tips you would like to share?
I try to stay healthy by eating and drinking healthy. I am a lover of all things organic and always recommend to make the switch to an organic lifestyle if possible.

Is there anything you love to wear but your partner simply hates? And the other way around, is there anything in your partners wardrobe you would love to see mysteriously disappear?
My husband hates my Ace and Jig jumpsuits! I will always love them and never will I be without them! I would love for his bright salmon coloured soccer socks to disappear!

What is your favorite holiday destination with kids?
Our favourite holiday destination with the kids is going back home to visit family. Home for me is where my mom lives and at the moment she is in Miami, Florida.

A decade ago would you have pictured your life as it is now?
No, not at all. A decade ago I was on a different path with my life, working in a UN entity and more focused on environmental issues. I am still worried about the environment but it is now focused on sharing my love for slow living lifestyle, slow fashion and sustainability.

Can you name 10 things (in no particular order) you couldn’t live without?
10 material things? If so, I guess it would have to be my: Wedding band, MacBook Laptop, My Mont Blanc Pen (which was my late uncles who gave it to me before he passed away), Honey Nut Cheerios, My LV agenda MM, La Mer Face cream, Aesop Face oil, Ace and Jig romper, Tod’s loafers, Lipgloss.

What advice would you give working moms who struggle with stress, a busy job, and family, career and time for yourself?
I don’t have any concrete advice but I do have some words that I live by.
1. Don’t feel guilty.
2. Don’t beat yourself up.
3. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else.
4. You are the best mom to your children and remember that you do your best.
5. You love them and they love you, always remember that.
