Q&A The-MOM.com talks with: Blanka Slak Rupnik
Meet one of our instagram favorites; Blanka Slak Rupnik, blogger and turban designer with her personal label HatsByBSR. Blanka lives together with her family, who is going to expand to 5 members this summer, in Vienna, Austria. This girlboss’ life rotates around balancing her business and family. She is the proud mom of (for now) 2 gorgeous kids, girl named Bianca and boy Manolo.
How would you describe your own personal style?
Unique with strong elements of menswear, however, still remaining very feminine and with the details that are always connected with my turbans and hats of HatsByBSR label.
As a busy mom how do you combine motherhood with your career?
I have the amazing help and support from my husband, who stands 100 % behind me and helps me with the children when I’m away for business. Weekends are ours and the kids are already very used to this routine that weekdays are for hard work but the evenings and weekends are for family time.
If the opportunity of a lifetime presents itself but there’s no way you can balance this with being a fulltime mom, what would you do? Dream job or family?
There is no dream job that could not include my family. It cannot be a dream job in my dictionary, if it takes away what I love the most. I think it should always be possible to combine both, I know many examples that prove that. Family must be a part of a business plan.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Online shopping during the late hours of the day, when the rest of the family sleeps.
Which fashion mom you look at for inspiration?
I really love Natasha Goldenberg and her quirky style, Tori Praver as an ultimate boho babe and classy Mira Duma. Beside their smashing style, I love how successful, full of ambition and positive they are. They are my modern version of a supermom with talent, love for their family and huge business potential.
What is the best part about being a mom?
Being able to live life through eyes of my children and to learn from them as much as possible. They made me a better person, they took away all the selfishness and changed it with love and even stronger dedication for living life to the fullest.
What inspires you most in life and where do you find creativity?
Just living my life to the fullest with all the travelling I do for work and spending time with my kids. They are very open-minded and creative and I sometimes try to look at the world from their perspective. I am constantly inspired by so many amazing people I meet in my life and I try to take good examples from them too… My ultimate source of creativity is visiting galleries and exhibitions in my city and browsing through old Vogue magazines during the evenings.
Are there any fun (childhood) traditions that you share with your kids?
We are baking (smaller pastries) and cooking together as I did with my mom and this works very well for the whole family and our quality time. We also appreciate our drawing session, which is also something I inherited from my childhood and which I absolutely love.
What’s currently on your reading list? Favorite book(s) of all time?
Right now a few pregnancy books to prepare myself for new the baby… but my all-time favorites are books from Paulo Coelho and good magazines with amazing interviews like Porter magazine. I wish I could have more time for this too.
What keeps you relaxed in stressful times? Describe your ultimate Me-time moment.
Having a day for myself when I can sleep a bit longer than normal… having a coffee in the city center with my favorite magazine and treat myself to a good pedi/mani.
How do you stay healthy? Are there any beauty and lifestyle tips you would like to share?
Eating healthy, home cooked food is something I invest a lot of effort into, exercising on a daily basis, everything from yoga, pilates to boxing. Trying to look at the things from a positive perspective and having dreams that drive me further is something I found as my sanity. My best lifestyle tip is to find a balance in everything we do. Whatever from this part works…
Is there anything you love to wear but your partner simply hates? And the other way around, is there anything in your partners wardrobe you would love to see mysteriously disappear?
I am my husband’s personal stylist and no clothes will ever get through me if I do not approve. He is actually my helping excuse for wearable menswear, since I always buy him things that I like and I can also borrow from time to time, such as blazers, oversized jackets and shirts. Other way around, I could say that he doesn’t love my baggy jeans but since I mostly pair them with high heels, he is okay with that.
What is your favorite holiday destination with kids?
Since the kids are rather small, Croatian or Italian seaside where there is sand and plenty of space for them to run free and play the whole day.
A decade ago would you have pictured your life as it is now?
Yes. I always wanted life that I am living right now and I also worked very hard for it. Having the 3rd baby on the way at 27 years of age could not be planned 10 years ago, but I always wanted a big family and now I’m happy that it’s happening from both a personal as well as a professional point of view.
Can you name 10 things (in no particular order) you couldn’t live without?
Refreshing face water
Travel ticket to anywhere
Pictures of my family
What advice would you give working moms who struggle with stress, a busy job, and family, career and time for yourself?
Balance is the most important thing in life. Focus on yourself as much as possible and appreciate every moment that you can have to yourself. Those rare moments, to just drink a coffee with a good magazine or book really count.
Which mom would you like to introduce for the next The-Mom.com talks with and why?
I’d like to introduce another Austrian blogger, stylish mommy Isabelle, from Mothers finest. She’s a great example of a mother of 3 small kids, very stylish, always dressed up, taking care of herself, promoting her own business and a very positive person.
