The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
This book is considered a classic in the English literature for children. The story is about a girl called Mary Lennox, who moves back to England after her parents die in India. The only person she really likes back in England is her nanny, Martha, who tells her about the secret garden. This garden is locked, and no one has entered for at least ten years. Mary decides to take care of the garden. At one night, she hears someone crying. It turns out to be her nephew, who is locked away because his father is scared he will get sick if he goes outside. Mary befriends him and together they explore the garden.
The Borrowers by Mary Norton
This fantasy novel is about a family of tiny people who secretly live in the walls and floors of an English house. They borrow stuff from the ‘big’ people in order to survive.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis
Four children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, are moved into the enormous house of a professor. There Lucy discovers a wardrobe which leads to another world: Narnia. She tells her brothers and sister, and together they start a magical adventure in a fairytale world.
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
Two children, Jesse and Leslie, become friends in high school. Leslie is a smart girl; she is talented, comes from a wealthy family, and is outgoing. Jesse, however, is an artistic boy from a middle class family, who is lonely and angry. This changes after meeting Leslie and the both of them create a magical forest kingdom for themselves. They name it ‘Terabithia’.
Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce
When his brother get measles, Tom has to stay with his uncle and aunt for a while. Since he is not allowed to play outside, Tom get bored and lonely. But then he hears that at night, the clock in the house strangely strikes 13. He discovers a large sunlit garden, that opens every night when the clock strikes 13. But at one night the garden suddenly doesn’t appear anymore. Will Tom find out why?
